FAQ
So…what is Age of Conan?
Age of Conan is an action MMORPG that has both a single player portion and a Massively Multiplayer portion. While you won’t play as Conan (and, really, do we want 5,000 Conan’s running around?), you will create a character and take place in a dark, mysterious (and M-rated) realm filled with magic, diabolical creatures both human and, um, not so human…and drunken brawls!
How does the single player portion work? For example, is it a separate game like Phantasy Star Universe? Is it offline?
Judging from the information released, AoC’s first twenty character levels will be single player. They take place in the same persistent online world, and plays a huge part in teaching the player how to play the game. While you will start alone, the degree to which you will be alone will vary. There will be times where you might run into other players. We’ve heard that the single player portion will take 15 to 20 hours of gameplay. Once you beat it, however, you will be able to skip it with any future characters.
What do you know about the story?
The story is comprised of four threads, one story per archetype (soldier, priest, rogue, mage) and the stories will braid together into one epic story arc. Funcom is keeping the meat of the story under wraps, but what is known is that you create a character aboard a slave ship. The ship falls under attack by a Stygian force and you are freed during the fight. You spend the beginning part fighting your tormentors before diving to safety in the sea. The game proper begins as you are washed ashore.
What kind of combat system will be in place?
Funcom calls their combat a “Real Combat” system. The idea stems from “grab a sword, smash an enemy” type gameplay. You have six directions to swing your weapon that will determine your hit chance and the damage. For instance, swinging at the head is a lot more difficult than swinging at the enemy’s chest. Also, directions can be strung together to form a free-style combo system that will open a special move.
What kinds of races are there?
Aquilonian, Cimmerian or Stygian are the three races you can choose from when creating a character. Not all races have access to every archetype. More information concerning the races will be forthcoming.
What types of gameplay will there be?
What types of gameplay will there be?
Everything from quests to exploring dungeons to large-scale PvP battles and sieges.
Sieges?
As a player, you will help others in creating cities, walls, buildings, etc. These can be laid siege to by NPCs and eventually other players. With ample warning, you will have to return to the city to help stop the siege by stopping their catapults and their hordes of foes.
What do you know about mounts?
There will definitely be mounts in the game. You will be able to ride these mounts into battle, where (at least for melee combat) your speed and timing will effect how much damage you deal, along with your weapon.
What about PvP?
AoC is definitely a PvP-based game and there will be various avenues to quench your murderous thirst. One of the more light-hearted ways is in the taverns. Taverns are free PvP zones that don’t rely on your level. Drunken brawls involving mugs and table chairs can, and will, erupt. There will be no death; the only penalty is being tossed out by a bouncer. The outside world will also rely on a more furious PvP system involving guild wars , skirmishes and major battles.
Is it true you can have guild cities?
Yes! AoC is very guild-centered. As you will see in the Prestige Classes, everyone will be able to contribute something to their guild city and will be vital in a guild’s survival. Remember, the lands of Conan are untamed and wild. When you build your city, you will no not only will have to worry about rival guilds but also the vile monsters that might build a nest near your city.
Can you have sex in AoC?
No, don’t be stupid.
But–
Cry more emo kid.
*Sigh* Fine, be that way. Meanie. Do you at least know when this sex-free video game will be released?
The plan is an October 30, 207 release.
