Gods
Mitra
Mitra is worshipped in Aquilonia, Argos, Corinthia, Nemedia, Zingara and Ophir. A benevolent god, Mitra is believed to be all-pervasive and without form, although he is often pictured as a tall man with wide-set, piercing eyes, curly hair and a patriarchal beard. The symbol of Mitra is a glowing axe of power. Mitra is a virtuous god, who recognizes telling a lie or betraying a friend as mortal sins. Mitra is an ancient enemy of the serpent-god, Set.
Set
Religion in Stygia is dominated by the worship of Father Set, the Serpent-god. Priests of Set profess that he is the most potent of all gods, a powerful friend and a terrible enemy, and that it is the fate of mankind to serve him. Set is also said to offer eternal life in tombs to those who serve him faithfully. Set often appears to his priests in the form of a giant snake. Set’s greatest opponent is Mitra.
Crom
Crom, the Cimmerian god, lives on Ben Morgh. The Cimmerians seldom pray to him; they believe it is usually best not to attract his attention. Crom is said to breathe the strength to strive and slay into a man at birth. After death, the Cimmerians believe their souls go to “a grey misty realm of clouds and icy winds, to wander cheerlessly for all eternity.”
Ymir
The Nordheimr worship Ymir, the Frost Giant, who lives in Valhalla, his castle far in northern Vanaheim. According to Nordheimr shamans, the souls of warriors who fall in battle go to Valhalla to feast and fight forever. This belief makes Nordheimr warriors terribly fierce in battle, and they often fight with no regard for their own safety.
Erlik
Erlik, the Flame-Lord and a god of northern Hyrkania, is a harsh god who believes in tempering the soul through trials and deprivation.
Xotli
Xotli, Lord of Terror was a demon-god of the Elder Night. He appears as a rolling cloud of ebony darkness, a vortex of ultimate, boreal cold. He drinks the living souls from those slain upon his towering, pyramidal altars in the islands of Antilla. Believed to be slain by Conan.
Bel
A god of thieves worshipped in Zamora. His name is used to identify other thieves.
Derketo
Derketo, Goddess of Lust, is a servent of Set. She represents the seductive nature of the flesh, and the desire for life which Set offers to maintain eternally. Derketo is commonly worshipped among the peasantry of Stygia, who find Set’s ascetic demands too restrictive.
