Compassionate Listening Compassionate Listening is a practice of deep, open-hearted, spiritual listening, from heart to heart, spirit to spirit, which transforms conflict, even in highly polarized situations. Global Citizen Journey is a visionary and action oriented project that brings vital energy, support and resources to communities in need --and provides a rich transformative experience for volunteers. The project has multiple purposes: grassroots citizen diplomacy, peacemaking, leadership building, education, environmental activism and service. A group of U.S. participants joins with local participants for a 2.5 week residential experience, with half the time spent on the work project and the other half in circle to build relationships and develop skills of communication, compassionate listening and conflict resolution as well as cross-cultural and gender relations. Our first journey was wildly successful in November, 2005, when to the ‘creeks’ area in the Delta region of Nigeria where the petroleum industry has gravely impacted the communities and the environment. We partnered with the villagers in Oporoza to build the first library in the entire region. The Niger Delta Friendship Library has proven to be an instrument of peace, bringing tribes together as partners that were in violent conflict in the past.
